Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that deals with gum disease, an inflammatory disease that affects the tissues that support the teeth in the jaws. It is one of the most common oral diseases and unfortunately it is often misdiagnosed or diagnosed in its late stages. The first signs are bleeding gums, gum swelling and redness, and mobile teeth. This disease is associated with several other systemic diseases, for example diabetes and cardio- vascular disorders.
Until 2012 Hugo practised in his private practice in Lisbon and was a visiting periodontist to other practices in Portugal. He then moved with his wife and daughter to Cambridge, U.K. and gained an academic post as the Specialist Periodontist and Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Manchester where he teaches part-time on the MSc. program in Periodontology. The remainder of his time is spent in private Specialist Periodontics practice around Cambridgeshire and now Oxfordshire. Hugo's private practice is centred around the Diagnosis and Treatment of Gum Diseases, as well as plastic surgery of the gums and tooth replacement with dental implants. He has extensive experience in all aspects of periodontology and implant dentistry and has a special interest in bone augmentation, bone and periodontal regeneration and periodontal plastic surgery. He also has varied experience in the treatment of peri-implantitis.
