The Link between Avoiding Heart Disease and Hygienist Treatment

It has been recognised for several years that maintaining good oral health can help prevent heart disease.  In today's Daily Mail Health section there is an article describing research in Taiwan that claimed the risk of a heart attack was reduced by 25% in patients who regularly see a dental hygienist and the risk of a stroke reduced by 13%.  In a separate study people who have fewer than 21 teeth were two thirds more likely more likely to have a heart attack, and a Swedish study found that people with significant gum infection were 50% more likely to have a heart attack.

Whilst the exact mechanism of how periodontal treatment and scaling with a hygienist reduces heart and stroke risks is still unclear, the evidence is building that looking after your gums is important not only to prevent you losing your teeth but also in protecting you from life endangering illnesses too.  At Ock Street Clinic in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, we have a team of expert hygienists who are dedicated to keeping your gums and teeth in top condition and our dentists place a high priority on preventative dentistry so will refer all patients at risk of gum disease for hygienist treatment.
