Is sugar a poison?

According to Laura Schmidt of California University, sugar is a poison and should be regulated like tobacco. She claims that sugar is too widely available and should be taxed to reduce its consumption. At Ock Street Clinic we spend our working lives dealing with the dental problems caused by sugar in the diet, and it's pretty much standard advice from our hygienists to avoid sugary drinks and sugary foods.  It's not just tooth decay, but gum disease (periodontal disease) and other systemic diseases including diabetes and heart disease are linked to sugary diets.

If you have any concerns about your diet then ask your dentist and hygienist for advice.  They can help you with an analysis of your food intake  and advise you how to substitute the more risky foods with delicious safer alternatives. If you are struggling with your diet our Oral Health Educator can also help.
